Scalable Ubiquitous Computing Systems or just Ubiquitous Systems A 15 - year Grand Challenge for computer science

چکیده
This project is one of a set of three, and the second of two “exemplary” Grand Challenges. The first of these will be an exemplar focused upon one or more specific applications, e.g. “A sentient building” or “Healthcare across a city” and will represent a driving set of requirements. The third project is the “Theory for ubiquitous data and processes” nexus, which underpins the other two. This challenge is to create the required novel architectural structures for scalable ubiquitous computing systems1. It is clear that we lack techniques and algorithms to design and implement information processing artifacts both in the large and the small that have desirable properties associated with other ubiquitous systems (e.g. buildings, food, entertainment) such as safety, low cost, availability and integration. There are clearly strong links with some parts of the strong software engineering grand challenge(s), and with the human computing interaction challenge(s).

A Grand Challenge in Computer Science: The Sentient Building (Part I)
The field of ubiquitous computing and some key computer science research challenges that it entails were described more than a decade ago by Weiser [1]. He defines ubiquitous computing as a phase in the development and use of computer systems in which they permeate our environment and are integrated in most artefacts, adding useful information services in an unobtrusive manner. One of the most ...
متن کاملTheories for Ubiquitous Processes and Data Platform for a 15-year Grand Challenge
Overview This paper is written as background for a proposed Grand Challenge in Computing Research, entitled Science for Global Ubiquitous Computing. The paper has a specific purpose: to trace the evolution of theoretical models for distributed and mobile computing, and the mutual influence between these models on the one hand and software design and development on the other. It also discusses m...
متن کاملBigraphs: Modelling, Simulation, and Type Systems On Bigraphs for Ubiquitous Computing and on Bigraphical Type Systems
We study how bigraphical reactive systems may be used for modelling and simulating — in a manner controlled by sorts and types — global ubiquitous computing. Ubiquitous computing was in the early 1990s envisioned by Mark Weiser to be the third wave of computing (after mainframes, and then personal computers), in which each person has many computers, receding into the background, at his or her d...
متن کاملSubmission to: Conference on Grand Challenges for Computing Research. Grand challenge 4: Ubiquitous Systems
This submission addresses the Ubiquitous Systems Grand Challenge. We propose that the challenge should be more explicit about issues concerning services within such systems. By services, we refer to networked software entities that provide the user with a service. Such services abound in computing and communications: GRID services, information services, network services, voice services, web ser...
متن کاملBigraphical Programming Languages for Pervasive Computing
The Bigraphical Programming Language project at IT University of Copenhagen contributes to the UKCRC Ubiquitous Computing Grand Challenge by researching the use of bigraphical reactive systems as a general framework in which to combine theories for design and analysis with techniques, tools and methodologies for engineering and systems building. Initial work has been addressing Context-awarenes...
